Zesty Buffalo Chicken Wings Recipe That Is Versatile & Kid Friendly

Zesty Buffalo Chicken Wings Recipe

BEHIND THE RECIPE

Love those zesty buffalo wing recipes! The problem is that I can never seem to get enough of them because they have that just right mix of flavors. If you like a bit of tangy, you will want to try this recipe. Although, I have to admit that I cannot remember exactly where this recipe came from. Regardless, it is definitely a “go to” for snacking on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It is also a great game day with friends, and a family movie night recipe.

If memory serves, the original recipe included packets of dry Italian dressing mix. The zesty Italian dressing in this recipe replaces that dry dressing mix. The reason for the ingredient exchange is because the actual dressing makes more sauce for baking the buffalo wings. A favorite reason for making these tasty buffalo wings for me, is absolutely no reason at all. Ranch dressing is my favorite dip, along with some crunchy and healthy celery on the side.

RECIPE TWEAKS

Another reason I love this recipe is because it can be versatile. The basic recipe is “without” a major spicy explosion. That milder effect works for the kiddos and of course, those of us who are not fond of a high heat factor. Want more heat? Anyone who loves it knows all too well how to increase that Scoville scale heat factor. Cayenne, a hot sauce that falls higher on the Scoville Scale, and also toss in some of your favorite chili peppers. Another version of the recipe is to add in just a smidgeon of mustard, as well as a little honey for making your family and friends just a little sweeter. Oh, and chicken thighs work here too.

Ingredients

  • 4 lbs chicken wings and drumettes
  • 1 cup your favorite hot sauce
  • 2/3 cup Italian dressing
  • 3/4 stick butter (6 Tbsp)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
  • Coat skillet with olive oil and saute chicken wings and drumettes to a golden brown, over medium to medium high heat. Make sure chicken is browned in single layers by cooking in individual batches.
  • Spray 9×11 baking sheet with oil and place browned chicken pieces in, in a single layer, and set aside.
  • Add the butter, hot sauce, lemon juice, Italian dressing, salt, garlic and onion powder into a bowl and heat in the microwave to melt the butter.
  • Once butter is melted, whisk together and pour over the browned chicken wings and drumettes. Use a spoon, to spoon sauce over chicken pieces, where pouring missed.
  • Place chicken in the preheated oven and bake for two hours. The longer you bake, I normally turn my oven off at this point and leave the wings to sit in the over while the chicken and the oven cool down.
  • Remove the chicken from the oven. Give the chicken pieces a turn or two, just to recoat. The sauce will be a little thicker and better cling to the chicken.
  • Feel free to plate the chicken wings and drumettes, and drizzle with the sauce left behind in the pan for a pretty presentation.

Notes & Credits

Cooking these wings “low and slow” makes them nice and tender, without causing your meat to be dry.
One thought is to mix different hot sauces. I usually mix 1/2 cup each, of two of our favorite hot sauce brands.
